Moving On - Part Deux

OK, I think I've gotten the bugs ironed out on my new site now. If you tried to get over to http://www.prilliman.com/blog/ before (and couldn't), it was probably because I fat-fingered the hyperlinks in my original post. I have corrected the links and also fixed (I think) the path resolution problems I was having with some of the web controls. So give it a try and let me know what you think - please leave a comment for me over there so that I can be sure it's working right, or leave me one here if you are still having any weird problems.

Moving On...

I'm afraid that the time has come for me to quit MSN Spaces. It's not because of blogger burnout though. I am just fed up with the poor quality of service, the total lack of control over content, the number of teeny boppers, and the fact that you have to sign in with a passport just to leave a comment.

That said, I have decided to run my own webserver down in my lab to be the new home for Hopelessly Aporetic. It's all about the control, baby. So while I am moving on from Spaces, I hope you will join me over at my new digs. Please bookmark my new address and come visit me over at http://www.prilliman.com/blog/ - I'll leave the lights on over here for awhile to help you find your way (and while I backfill all my posts into my new server).

This Space For Rent

See ya on the web, kids.

[Update] - Ooops! Upon further review from the geek in the booth, when looking at the new space from a remote PC this morning, it is obvious I still have some "localhost" paths in my configuration so the stylesheets and graphics aren't working right. Looks like I have some work to do when I get back home. In the meantime, please forgive the butt ugly appearance, it is only temporary and I promise to get it fixed ASAP. Guess that's what I get for not testing it thoroughly.

The Great Wall of Texas?

"We Need a Fence" is a project that promotes the idea of building a state of the art border fence along the US/Mexico border.

A recent Bear Stearns report estimates that there are currently over 20 million immigrants illegally living in the United States, and the number of illegals that cross the Mexican border is growing at a rate of about 1,000,000 a year. It's not just Mexicans either; approximately 100,000 members of the annual wetback migration across the Mexican border belong to nationalities other than Mexico, many from "special interest" countries like Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Jordan. It is out of control.

Although the initial cost to build such a barrier along the 2,000 odd miles of our southern border is estimated at between 4 to 8 billion dollars (think Israeli style border fence, not the backyard chain link variety); it would pay for itself very quickly in the form of tax dollars that would no longer get spent providing education, health care, incarceration and deportation of the illegal aliens flooding across the Mexican border. In California alone these costs are about 10 billion dollars per year.

I don't know about the rest of you, but I'd much rather see my tax money spent keeping the illegals out of the country than I would having it used to make sure they are healthy and educated once they get here. And if it only keeps one potential cop killer like Raul Garcia-Gomez out of our country then it will have been worth the initial cost.

Go check it out, if you feel like I do, you'll sign their petition.

Denver Hates Italians...

...or maybe it's just the Portugese. Denver mayor John Hickenlooper is trying to put a stop to the city's annual Columbus Day Parade (and Spoiled Vegetable Throwing Contest). I am not sure what all the hubbub is about though. I mean, what harm is there in allowing the Sons of Italy to march through empty downtown streets at the crack of dawn on Saturday, while the likes Glenn Morris, Russell Means, Chief Running Nutter Ward Churchill, and the rest of their native American cronies line the streets exchanging epithets with the parade participants and police? For crying out loud only 240 protesters were arrested at last years event; that is hardly a significant fraction of Denver's total population my friends. Sounds like good clean family fun to me, why spoil it for everyone else?

Here are a couple of snippets from an email that Hickenlooper sent to leaders of both sides of the controversial event last week:

"Frankly, I am sick and tired of this entire costly, frustrating and potentially dangerous situation that does nothing but generate ill will."

"I am happy to help celebrate Italian heritage. A parade that inspires such community anguish does not achieve that goal. Most spectators avoid the parade, which winds down streets that are either empty or lined primarily with protesters and police."

He also said efforts to manage the annual controversy is "like beating one's head against the wall."

For some reason, however; all he managed to do was piss off both sides.

I have a suggestion for the mayor of our fair city. Why not just give the Indians a small parcel of land down by Union Station - say across the street from your Wyncoop brew pub? Then they can build themselves a nice little casino as is their right as an oppressed people. But give it to them on the condition that they must allow the Sons of Italy to host spaghetti night every Wednesday and Sunday. Sounds like a win/win to me. Even the cops will get to keep their overtime pay.

Maybe they could call the place Mayor John's Gaming Wigwam and Ristorante Italiano...

Sheesh.

Mark Takes the Red Pill

My friend and co-worker Mark has announced that he has been assimilated into the b0rg. I'd congratulate him if I didn't think he was nuts. Of course he is quite a bit younger than I am, so the lure of the red pill was a lot more attractive to him than it is for me. I suppose if I was still 33, getting a job with Microsoft might seem more like snagging the brass ring on the software developer merry-go-round to me as well (that and the fact that I'd never trade my current gig to become a small cog in such a big machine).

Seriously, Mark will make a good little 'softie, and they are lucky to have him. He will be joining the Visual Studio Team Architect team as a program manager next month.  Good luck Mark, we'll miss you around here.

1st request - go over to the MSN shack and rattle their cages re: QOS.
